High Tunstall College of Science v Laurence Jackson School

On a perfect autumn evening, High Tunstall welcomed Laurence Jackson from Guisborough in the 2nd Round of the ESFA PlayStation Schools' Cup competition. Following four consecutive wins, the hosts were in confident mood and started the match brightly with neat interchanges between the midfield trio of Taylor, Windsor & Purvis.

It was a well-timed run and finish from lone striker Patton that gave High Tunstall an early lead as the front man showed great composure to coolly slot past the advancing goalkeeper.

The advantage was soon doubled following a well worked set-piece. Taylor sent a corner to the back post and a rehearsed routine allowed Windsor to be free in the 6 yard box where he could bullet a header into the back of the net.

The visitors then began to settle and High Tunstall were indebted to the pressure being put on the opposition midfielders by debutant Ben Clarke to allow the clean sheet to remain intact.

It was a great individual effort that saw the hosts lead stretch further. Ellis Taylor broke free on the right, saw off a pursuing defender before finishing calmly.

That was how things remained until shortly into the second half when LJS got onto the scoresheet following a close range header from a corner. Resolute defending from Tennant and solid goalkeeping from Brown kept the two goal advantage intact until the final whistle and it was the boys in blue from Elwick Road that moved into the 3rd round draw.

The ESFA would like to thank Mr Holden from High Tunstall for submitting this match report for their team’s second round win. The third round draw now sees them taking on either Walker Technology College or Kenton School to progress through the competition.
