Friary School from Lichfield, Staffordshire, were crowned champions of the U13 Minute Maid Schools’ Cup for girls after beating Frances Bardsley School (Romford, Essex) 3-2 in the final held at Coventry City FC on Friday 23 May.

Friary School settled quickly and took the lead on 10 minutes thanks to an impressive Katie Wilkinson free kick. Friary then doubled their lead on 27 minutes when Katherine Knight cheekily chipped Frances Bardsley keeper, Shannon O’Callaghan from inside the penalty area.

After the break the Romford based school looked more threatening with the dangerous Frances Bardsley captain, Faye Cooke, providing a constant menace to the Friary defence. It was Cooke on forty minutes who broke through the Friary back four only to see her shot brilliantly saved at close range by the Friary keeper, Sarah Nicholas.

A few moments later Frances Bardsley opened up the Friary defence again only to see Faye Cooke’s goal disallowed by the Assistant Referee’s flag. Faye Cooke was then thwarted for a third time in as many minutes when she saw her goal line effort blocked on the line following a scramble in the Friary penalty area.

It was Friary who added a third on 45 minutes as Katie Wilkinson broke clear of the Frances Bardsley back four and coolly slotted home past the advancing keeper.

Frances Bardsley were not dead and buried yet as Katie Pearce-Watson pulled one back. A few minutes before full time Faye Cooke eventually got her just reward, as she netted a second for Frances Bardsley to set up a nervous last few moments for Friary.

However, Friary held out and managed to secure their first national football title as they were awarded the Cup by ESFA Chairman, Gerry Smith.and Minute Maid Regional Director, Stuart Agates.
