Sussex Schoolboys tasted glory at Birmingham City on Tuesday afternoon when they lifted the ESFA Under 18 Inter County Trophy (sponsored by the Premier League) for the second successive year.

Staffordshire got off to an unfortunate start as midfielder Dan Skelton was taken ill during the warm-up and then lost England Schools International central defender, Jack Thorley, inside the first ten minutes.

Staffordshire had a Paul Lister goal bound effort cleared off the line on the half hour. Simon Johnson then rattled the woodwork for Sussex with a 25 yard thunderbolt.

Sussex broke the deadlock before the interval after Marcus Whiteman capitalised on a Staffordshire defensive error.

Both teams continued to create chances after the break with the Staffordshire keeper Leigh Miller pulling off several fine saves, while Sussex goalkeeper Paul Nessling produced an excellent save at the other end to keep the south coast team’s lead intact.

Sussex doubled their lead on 52 minutes thanks to a strike from Michael Demetriou, before substitute, Jack Dixon, completed the win when he was found inside the box from a free-kick and slotted home past Miller in the Stafordshire goal.
