A 4 – 2 win to Leicestershire Girls’ U16 in their first County match of the season!
28 September 2016

Worcestershire U16 Girls’ made the journey to Leicestershire on Wednesday evening to play in their first County fixture of the 2016-17 season.

This game would prove to be a good opportunity for the new additions to the squad to experience the pace and physicality required to play at this level of representative football.

Worcestershire started the match very brightly with lots of energy and bags of spirit, closing down and pressing their opponents in many areas of the pitch. Unfortunately the early hard work and endeavour did not pay off as the strong Leicestershire team, featuring a couple of full England Internationals and a number of RTC Tier 1 players, scored two early goals to take the lead. Worcestershire, showing great character, soon gained a precious foothold in the game with a well-deserved goal to reduce the deficit.

The ball was played behind the two Leicestershire central defenders to Jade Grove who, with pace and power, was able to muscle her way through and finish with ease to make the score 2-1 at the half time break.

At half time, Leicestershire re-grouped and the second period became fiercely contested until, as the final quarter of the match approached, Leicestershire scored once again to make it 3-1. Worcestershire were stung into life and immediately responded with another goal, coming from our big number 9, Jade Grove – her second of the evening – who managed to bear and wrong foot a defender before slotting the second goal past the goalkeeper.

The final score ended at 4-2 to Leicestershire in a thrilling game, which Worcestershire deserved to get more out of. Overall it was a great performance from all the girls, but with special mentions to the wide play and work of Rebbecca Gompertz, which caused problems to our opponents all evening and finally thanks for the fantastic support from parents, who made the journey. We are all now looking forward to building on this result and taking the many positives into our next game.

The ESFA would like to congratulate Leicestershire on their win in this first match of the season and also thank Worcestershire not only for their participation but also this fantastic written account of the game!
