In a very closely fought encounter at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light, Cardinal Heenan U14’s continued their two year unbeaten run in ESFA National Cup competitions. The game started brightly with Challoner’s gaining the upper hand in the first ten minutes, Prince Domafriyie looking particularly dangerous until he received a knock to the shin which required off the field treatment for 10 minutes. Cardinal Heenan worked their way back into the game with crisp inter-passing through the midfield leading to a couple of chances which were off target. In the sixteenth minute Challoner’s custodian Emmanuel Agboola threw a clearance to left back Agibola Orilonishe which he failed to control quickly and Lee Jones, Cardinal Heenan’s lively centre forward seized his opportunity. Two touches and a fierce shot gave Agboola little chance to prevent Cardinal Heenan taking the lead. The remainder of the first half saw both teams playing excellent football without creating any clear chances.

The second half was one of fluctuating fortunes with both teams striving for dominance alas without success. Cardinal Heenan were continuing to play their probing inter-passing game and Challoners doing their best to release their speedy forwards. Both defences worked hard to ensure that there were no further breaches and it is to the credit of both sides that the game remained tense and entertaining until Premier League referee, Mark Clattenburg, blew for full time.

In his post match presentation ESFA Vice Chairman, Neil Pont, congratulated both teams on their skills and efforts and especially the attitude in which the players of both sides conducted themselves. A credit to themselves and the two schools.

Cardinal Heenan now go forward as the ESFA representatives at the SAFIB U14 British Isles Cup in Dublin on 25-27 May.
