Maiden Erlegh School celebrate cup success

Maiden Erlegh School (Reading Schools’ FA) were crowned champions of the ESFA Under 16 Schools’ Cup for Girls after they defeated Countesthorpe Community College (South Leicestershire SFA) 4-0, at Burton Albion Football Club this morning.

At a sun-soaked Pirelli Stadium both teams created early opportunities, but it was Countesthorpe’s Beth Bozzoni who had the first clear chance on 11 minutes, when her effort was fired straight into the grateful arms of Maiden Erlegh goalkepeer, Jo Sandels.

Maiden Erlegh took the lead on 16 minutes after Countesthorpe goalkeeper, Mollie Walden, spilled a corner which was then swept home by Nicole Harkness from close range.

Maiden Erlegh, by this time, were beginning to assert their authority on the game and nearly extended their lead on 21 minutes when the dangerous number 11, Rosella Ayane, raced through only to see her left foot effort hit the side netting. However, Ayane did not have to wait much longer to register her first strike of the morning, as once again, she burst through the Countesthorpe back line and this time made no mistake, by sliding the ball past the on-rushing keeper to make it 2-0 on 24 minutes.

Maiden Erlegh’s Ellie Towers then struck the post on 26 minutes as she collected the ball on the corner of the penalty box and unleashed a powerful shot which left the Countesthorpe keeper rooted.

On 28 minutes, Rosella Ayane was again in the action, when her chipped effort landed on top of the net, from a tight angle. Maiden Erlegh went into the interval with their tails up after establishing a deserved two goal lead.

Countesthorpe’s Beth Bozzoni nearly pulled a goal back early in the second half, but her effort was put wide following a goal-mouth scramble. From then on, it looked more likely that Maiden Erlegh would add to their lead as Jade Bradley’s 20 yard strike flew just over the bar.

On 48 minutes, Rosella Ayene, bagged her second of the match to make it 3-0 when she found herself one on one and calmly slotted past the advancing keeper.

Rosella Ayene completed an impressive hatrick on 66 minutes, as once again, she raced through to slot the ball into the back of the net.

The ESFA Chairman, John Appleby, was on hand to present the winners’ trophy and medals.
