Thurstable girls celebrate with the Trophy

Don Valley Stadium was the venue for the Final of the ESFA Under 18 Schools’ Trophy for Girls. Thurstable School (Colchester & North East Essex SFA) and St Julie’s Catholic High School (Liverpool SFA) arrived to be greeted by clear blue skies and hot sun on Monday 12 March 2012.

Both teams started fast with chances created by both teams. In the 13th minute of the match, Thurstable took the lead with a goal from Emily Clements. It was a challenge between her and a St Julie’s defender with Emily just edging it past the goalkeeper.

Three minutes later, St Julie’s equalised with Inayah Robinson lobbing the goalkeeper from the left side with the defender chasing it, but not being able to prevent the goal.

On 23 minutes Thurstable re-took the lead with Sophie Blowers lobbing the goalkeeper with a sublime chip. Both teams continued to create chances, but the score remained 2-1 to Thurstable at the interval.

The second half kicked off and it only took St Julie’s 7 minutes to get back into the game with a headed goal by Inayah Robinson from a corner.

As tiredness began to set in, the match became an attritional contest, but there were still good moments of play from both sides. In the 88th minute the St Julie’s goalkeeper, Alex Caffrey, pushed the ball just wide of her post to keep Thurstable out and taking the game into extra time.

Thurstable were awarded a free kick 40 yards from goal in the 4th minute of extra time. Sian Fagg stepped up to take it and flighted a long ball into the penalty area, which caught St Hulie’s keeper of her line and drifted into the back of the net.

St Julie’s kept pushing in the second half of extra time, but could not get that important goal and the referee bringing the game to an end.
