Cirencester College - ESFA Under 18 Colleges' Trophy Champions 2012

Cirencester College celebrate win

Macclesfield Town FC hosted this year’s final of the ESFA Under 18 Colleges’ Trophy for Boys. It was a fine day with the Moss Rose Stadium bathed in glorious sunshine; Balby Academy of Sport (Doncaster SFA) and Cirencester College (Stroud SFA) were contesting to see which team would be crowned champions for 2012.

The match kicked off and it only took Balby Academy 4 minutes to come close to opening the scoring with Brandon Wobschall hitting the ball the wrong side of the upright. On 12 minutes Balby came close again with two shots and a goal-line clearance. The pressure stayed on as Balby’s Joe Leesley broke free but the Cirencester goalkeeper, Harry Ellis, saved well to deny going behind.

On 24 minutes, Cirencester’s Joe Shepherd, managed to get the ball to the touch line but pulled it back too deep and the chance went begging. Ten minutes before the interval, a cross from Cirencester’s Josh Morse was put over the bar by Jack Smith meaning the teams went into the break tied at 0-0.

Cirencester started brightly in the second half, with Joe Shepherd heading onto the roof of the net. Three minutes later Joe Shepherd made it 1-0 to Cirencester with a solid header from a free kick into the top left of the goal.

A Balby penalty shout came in the 65th minute but referee Paul Wilcox dismissed the shout. Balby carried on pressurising with a free kick which was well defended by Cirencester.

In the 74th minute, Balby had their best chance at goal from a corner which went just wide of the goalpost.

Cirencester attacked again on 80 minutes when substitute Danny Hale ran down the right wing and lobbed the keeper to put them 2-0 up. Balby kept taking the ball forward but were opened up again with a goal from Cirencester’s Adam Mace putting the tie to a close at 3-0.
