West Derby won 4-2 on penalties

This was the second National Final to be held at Burton Albion Football Club on Monday 26 March, following on from the Girls’ Final in the morning. A typical English cup-tie ensued with no quarter given from either side during the early exchanges.

The first shot on target came on 4 minutes when St Martin’s number 10, Thomas Lapslie, was played through the middle only to see his shot fired straight at the West Derby keeper, Adam Patterson.

West Derby’s industry saw them gradually take control of the game and their hard work nearly paid off on 29 minutes when Danny Butler smashed a superb effort against the bar from 20 yards.

Liam Davies also went close for West Derby before Ste Clarke saw another long range effort saved well by the St Martin’s keeper, James Southgate.

West Derby School took the lead on 45 minutes when Thomas Roberts smashed a terrific 25 yard effort into the top corner of the net to send the Merseyside school’s supporters into hysteria.

St Martin’s responded well to going a goal down and found themselves level on 47 minutes when Thomas Lapslie was upended in the penalty area. Lapslie stepped up to take the penalty kick himself and despatched with maturity to send the keeper the wrong way.

Both teams continued to toil in the afternoon sun with no real further chances created until West Derby number 7, Liam Davies, sent the St Martin’s goalkeeper full length to tip the ball round the post, during added time.

No goals were scored in a tense period of extra time, so the tie went to penalties.

West Derby School proceeded to win 4-2 on penalties thanks to converted spot kicks from: Joss Cummins, James Johnson, Adam Patterson and David Moore.
