England Under 18 Schools' Squad 2011
The ESFA Under 18 squad concluded their coaching week in Spain with an exciting 0-0 draw against a very talented CF Malaga team. 0-0 exciting? A contradiction in terms? Not with this game.
Both teams proved to be very adept at retaining possession and finding the searching through ball which gave forwards an opportunity to test the defences. In the 16 minute a free kick from the England right flank brought out a magnificent save from the Malaga goalkeeper from Josh White’s goal-bound effort and the keeper was further tested when Jonathan Barden fired in a great effort from 25 yards. It was not all one way, however, and the England defence needed to keep their concentration and discipline against a mobile, well drilled set of forwards. Josh Hart and Ed Baldy, the England keepers playing half each, were kept on their toes to preserve the clean sheet. The second half was equally tight with the tempo raised by both teams searching for that elusive goal. England went closest when Jonathan Evans headed narrowly wide, again from a free kick from the right. At the end both managers were pleased with the performance of their teams with Andy Williams very satisfied with his team’s performance against the young Spanish professionals. However, we still await the performance that will leave him at a loss for words!
Overall this has been a great preparation week for the team’s forthcoming Centenary Shield fixtures at home against Northern Ireland at Telford next Friday followed by Wales at Yeovil on the 25 March.
