esfa.co.uk once again caught up with the England U18 Schools' Team Manger, Andy Williams, to gain his thoughts on the recent regional trials.
"Personally I find the regional trial games are great occasions to look forward to. Not only do we get to visit new places across the country, but we are alwaysextended a warm welcome and incredible hospitality. This weekend has been no exception; I really appreciate the efforts of all concerned but must say a huge thank you to Rayners Lane FC and Belper Town FC in particular.
From a football perspective we were not to be disappointed as both games were of a very high standard. On Saturday the South East beat a very strong South West side courtesy of two first half goals, whilst on the Sunday the Midlands staged a fantastic two goalfightback to snatch a 3-3 draw with the last kick of the game.
After we had completed the round of regional trials, I knew final selection was going to be difficult; I never realised however, how difficult it was to become as the weekend progressed. Following the SE v SW game on Saturday morning, I had so much going round my head on Sunday morning, that I woke at 5amalready toying with names and considering options. You can imagine how difficult the task became having watched a six-goal thriller later on in the day!
Having given their all, I know that some players will be extremely disappointed today. The same advice still applies - stay fit and be ready for the call if it comes. The standard on show was very high indeed and I am already looking forward to working with the final 34 players at Lilleshall over the weekend of December 2nd-4th when we will play the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy."
