esfa.co.uk once again caught up with the England Under 18 Schoolboys Team Manager, Andy Williams, to gain his insight into the recent regional trials that were held around the country:

“We have had two incredibly productive weekends. For the first weekend (at Blackburn (North) and Belper Midlands)) we were blessed with superb footballing conditions. Both venues facilitated good quality football and the trialists certainly did not disappoint. This good fortune was then replicated for the second trial weekend (Northwood FC (SE) and The Fry Club (SW)). There is always a positive sense of anticipation at the first trial weekends, and we were not to be disappointed. I want to personally thank each and every player for attending and trialing. A trial can be nervy no matter what the level. The manner in which the boys set about their games was a credit to themselves and to all of the teachers and coaches who work with them week in and week out.

One or two boys will undoubtedly be disappointed that they have not been selected to progress to the next stage, but we are confident we have made the correct choices. It is important that in light of the decisions that have been made, they continue to enjoy the game, working hard on their personal development. Whilst disappointment is hard to swallow, the standard was very high and a number of players came very close - we had to make some very difficult decisions.

We now look forward to the two regional games (South East v South West at Rayners Lane FC, Saturday 12.11.11 and Midlands v North at Belper Town FC Sunday 13.11.11). Each squad is littered with quality schoolboys, so those wishing to make the final 34 will have to step their game up and prove their fitness beyond doubt. To make this stage is a real accolade for each of the players, but with selection within their grasp, I hope the players remain focused and remember to enjoy the occasion and the moment.”
