Spennymoor School lifted the Minute Maid Durham County Cup for boys following a tense and closely contested County Final against Hebburn Comprehensive School.

Although there were few chances for either side during the match, it proved to be an enthralling and excellent contest from start to finish.

During the opening exchanges both teams were well matched and it was the team from Hebburn who carved out the first real chance. Spennymoor goalkeeper Jamie Wilson was called into action to make an excellent save from a swerving shot 10 minutes in as Hebburn attacked with menace.

Several minutes later Spennymoor scored from a corner, as the Hebburn goalkeeper was unable to deny Spennymoor central defender Christopher Dodds as he headed in the only goal of the match.

For the remainder of the game both defences were firmly on top and played superbly, denying their opposing forwards any clear-cut chances.

Hebburn centre forwards tried to attack on breaks utilising their pace, only to be matched by the strength and speed of Spennymoor?s central defenders Christopher Dodds and Reece Whooley.

During the second half Spennymoor forwards Clarke Rivers and Ross Morrow worked hard to create chances to extend their side?s lead, but once again Hebburn defenders were quick to react to any threat.

Spennymoor maintained their slender lead until the final whistle to secure their victory in this season?s Minute Maid Durham County Cup.

After the Spennymoor coach Russell Braithwaite commented:

?It was a great example of schoolboys? football with excellent support from both schools? parents and teachers. ?
