Lindsey Boys march on!

esfa.co.uk continues to follow the progress of Lindsey School, Grimsby, in this season's U15 National Schools' Cup for Boys, as their Year 10 Boys Football team made it though to Round Six after a dramatic 3-2 victory over All Saints RC School in Mansfield.

After last weeks postponement due to a waterlogged pitch, there was still evidence of the heavy rain that has swept the North of England as the pitch was very heavy in places, and together with a swirling wind ensured that a passing game was never really in question.

Lindsey started brightly, with Joe Hutchinson linking well with Luke Fanthorpe down the right and forcing the keeper into a smart save. It was somewhat against the run of play when All Saints took the lead. A long throw in from the right was met with a bullet header from the tall centre-half, who wheeled away in delight. The scores were levelled soon after though, as the inform Hutchinson beat two defenders before hitting an unstoppable shot high into the roof of the net from twenty-five yards.

Midway through the first half Lindsey were forced into their first change when Ryan Kelsey hobbled off with an ankle injury, with Luke Stanger slotting into the centre of defence. The new-look pairing of Parker and Stanger were soon picking the ball out of the back of the net when the All Saints number ten cooly finished, leaving the Lindsey defence looking for an offside flag that was never going to be raised.

After the two managers said their piece at the interval it was Lindsey who came out fighting. Coach Allenby switched Tom Heaton to centre-half, with Stanger moving to left back, Ryan Gilby to left midfield and Luke Dawson to centre midfield. With the conditions starting to play an ever-increasing role, both defences were on high alert. Hutchinson went close with a near post shot that the keeper did well to save, and Billy Westerman should have done better when clean through.

With twelve minutes remaining Lindsey grabbed a deserved equaliser. Westerman did fantastically well on the right flank, and continued his run into the box, where he finished smartly with the inside of his foot to level the game. It was not all Lindsey though, and the All Saints striker will have nightmares about missing an open goal from inside the six-yard box with the keeper beaten.

As the game headed towards extra time, Hutchinson and Gilby linked brilliantly down to the left, and Gilbey's cross evaded the previously excellent keeper, and Fanthorpe slid the ball in to give Lindsey the lead for the first time, which they held onto for the remaining five minutes of play.

Lindsey are now through to the sixth round, where they will face the winners of the match between South Holderness School from Hull and Kingstone School of Barnsley.
