The PlayStation® Schools’ Cup Festival drew to a close on a day where once again some of England’s best young footballers impressed the watching crowds.

Tottenham Hotspur star Danny Rose came along to support the final day and was overawed by the trademark high standards of football that have been contested across the duration of the Festival.

The quantity of both goals and excitement soared to new heights and this upward trend showed no sign of stopping in the first match of the day – the English Schools’ FA (ESFA) PlayStation Under 15 Schools’ Cup for Girls. A goal inside five minutes set the tone and there was constant action throughout as St Bede’s RC High School (Blackburn) eventually prevailed 7-3 against Fullbrook School, impressively turning round a 3-1 deficit.

It was the turn of Hampton School (Richmond) and St Francis Xavier’s College (Liverpool) next as they contested the ESFA PlayStation Under 12 B Team Schools’ Cup. Hampton took an early lead but St Francis Xavier’s, the former school of current Liverpool star Jon Flanagan, turned the game around and took home the trophy with a 2-1 victory. However the team were to go home with smiles on their faces as Danny Rose passed on some encouraging words in the players’ lounge after the game.

Danny received a hero’s welcome from the crowd when he made it down to pitchside as he arrived just before the third game of the day – Sunderland Schools’ FA v Bedford Schools’ FA in the ESFA PlayStation Under 13 Inter Association Trophy. Danny, who was on loan at Sunderland last season, was wildly cheered by the small travelling contingent from the North East who had further reason to celebrate when the side went on to win 3-2 despite a courageous second half fight-back from Bedford who went into the break 3-0 down.

The next game had an identical scoreline as Ibstock Place School (Richmond) narrowly defeated Blacon High School (Chester) in the ESFA PlayStation Under 14 Small Schools’ Cup final. The game was settled by a stunning acrobatic volley from defender Alex Bloomer, a goal which was fit to grace any game at any level. It also ensured Ibstock Place would be going home with one trophy to show off from across the three days after an unfortunate defeat for the Under 15s in the first game of the Festival back on Monday.

The curtain then came down on the Festival with the 15th and final match of the three days as Sussex County Schools’ FA took on Essex County Schools’ FA in the ESFA PlayStation Under 14 Inter County Trophy for Boys. Essex took the game to their opponents from the off and pulled out a 3-0 lead at half time with some clinical finishing. It was a different story in the second half as Sussex enjoyed most of the play and pulled a goal back, however their brave efforts weren’t enough to deny Essex the glory as Queen’s iconic ‘We Are The Champions’ rang out through the Madejski Stadium PA system for one final time.
