Frome College (Mid Somerset SFA) 4-3 Thomas Telford School (Telford & Wrekin SFA)

The Premier League U16 Schools’ Cup for Girls National Final was the first of two matches to take place at the Manchester Regional Arena on Tuesday 25 April 2017.

Frome College were confirmed as the winners of the 2017 Premier League Under 16 Schools’ Cup for Girls after narrowly beating Thomas Telford 4-3 in an enthralling match. An early goal from Chloe Gilroy put Frome College ahead before Josey Taylor could only divert Jessica Jennings’ telling cross into her own net whilst under severe pressure from Thomas Telford’s number 9, Sadie Craig in the 30th minute. There was what seemed like a flurry of goals within the last 10 minutes of the first half as Frome’s captain; Ellie Strippel’s header was correctly adjudged to have crossed the line, despite the best efforts of Thomas Telford’s keeper, Lydia Simkiss. Not to be deterred however, Thomas Telford pulled level in the 39th minute through a long range effort from Thomas Telford captain, Anna Morphet. Thereby, leaving the tie finely balanced at the half time interval. Frome College raced out of the blocks in the second half and regained the lead courtesy of Katie Minty’s delicate pass from inside the area. That lead was extended in the 74th minute as Chloe Gilroy grabbed her second of the day: this time she raced on to Betty Restorick’s clearance to lob the ball over the onrushing Simkiss. It would prove to be a vital strike, as in the last minute of normal time, Eleanor Vernon was fouled inside the area and Anna Morphet emphatically converted the resulting penalty. However, Frome managed to see out the rest of the match successfully to claim their third national title in fifteen years. Both sides deserve tremendous credit for the entertaining spectacle that they produced in front of a lively crowd of school peer supporters in challenging weather conditions.

We would like to congratulate the players of Thomas Telford School on making it to the National Final this season.
