Match Report: Premier League Under 16 Small Schools’ Cup National Final

Gordon’s School (Woking SFA) 1-4 Church Stretton School (South Shropshire SFA)
The Premier League U16 Small Schools’ Final was the second match to take place within the grounds of the Etihad Stadium in Manchester on the 24 April 2017.
Church Stretton School have been confirmed as the winners of the 2017 Premier League Under 16 Small Schools’ Cup after beating Gordon’s School 4-1. It proved to be a fantastic advert for schools’ football in England with both teams producing some excellent quality game play throughout. The only difference between the two teams was that Church Stretton School appeared to be much more clinical when the opportunities presented themselves. Church Stretton School raced into the lead after Owen Holdsworth fired past Gordon’s School’s goalkeeper, Andrew Sadler in the opening minute. Gordon’s School levelled in the 20th minute via Gordon’s captain, Dan Lowe’s first time finish after some slick first touch passing. Church Stretton’s James Hill then made it 2-1 at the half time interval with a low effort that went in off the post. Owen Holdsworth netted his second goal in the 56th minute after he sent a lob over the despairing Andrew Sadler. The scoring was complete in the 69th minute when Church Stretton’s captain, Jack Leask converted a penalty after the aforementioned Hill had been fouled. Both sides deserve tremendous credit for the entertaining spectacle that they produced in front of an extremely partisan and vociferous crowd in challenging weather conditions.
Gordon’s School, accepted their defeat gracefully and thoroughly deserved their applause during the post match presentation.
