Grassroots football in Shropshire was given a boost when Hadley Leaning Community in Telford were presented with a cheque from the Football Foundation, The FA and the ESFA worth £238 toward their new 9v9 goalposts.

Hadley Leaning Community had applied for funding toward the purchase of the new, smaller goals recommended by the FA for Under 11 and Under 12 matches. Through the Foundation’s Youth Football Goalpost scheme, grants are available to schools to cover 50% toward the total cost of purchasing these new, smaller goals.

Paul Thorogood, CEO of the Football Foundation said ‘Congratulations to Hadley Learning Community on working with the Shropshire FA to secure this grant for Youth Football Goalposts, which will help benefit Hadley community significantly.’

The school in central Telford teaches pupils from the ages of 5 to 16 and also boasts a community field which is open to the public outside of school hours and used for recreational football by local teams. The community enjoys the facility free of charge so the new goalposts will get extensive use.

Funded by the Premier League, The FA and the Government, via Sport England and in conjunction with the ESFA, The Football Foundation is the nation’s largest sports charity. Since it was launched in 2000, the Football Foundation has awarded 13,000 grants, worth £50million towards improving grassroots sports, which it has used to attract an extra £719million in partnership funding.

Mark Hignett, ESFA Council member and Senior Assistant Headteacher at Hadley Learning Community said ‘As an ESFA Council Member who also teaches at Hadley Learning Community, I am delighted to see the two organisations working together along with the Football Foundation and FA to support the school and community in providing these 9v9 goalposts’. Luke Fletcher, Head of PE, who applied for the grant on behalf of the school finished by saying ‘On behalf of the students at HLC, I would like to thank the Football Foundation, The FA and ESFA for supporting our students’ development by providing the funding for the 9v9 goal posts. The students across all phases will benefit from the installation of the new posts and this will help football at HLC continue to develop.’
