Essex County Schools' FA

Essex County Schools’ FA and Lancashire County Schools’ FA stepped out into the rain at The Ricoh Arena, home of Coventry City Football Club to contest for this season’s ESFA Under 16 Inter County Trophy for Girls but by the end of RESPECT handshake the rain had stopped and it brightened up for a great game of football.

Lancashire started the stronger of the two teams with 5 minutes of constant pressure on the Essex goal but couldn’t get through the defence.

On the 13th minute Essex got the first goal of the afternoon as Evie Clarke took a shot from outside the box after being unmarked and hit it into the centre of the goal going through the Lancashire keeper.

Lancashire were pressing again and 4 minutes later Chloe Adams hit the bar after the Essex keeper got a vital hand to it to keep the game at 1-0.

Lancashire keep pressing with runs forward from Chloe Adams but they just couldn’t find that final touch to put it past the Essex goal keeper.

After 26 minutes Essex hit the bar! A corner came in from the right but the keeper spills the cross and lands at an Essex foot inside the 6 yard box but smashes against the woodwork to keep it at just 1-0.

30 minutes played and Lancashire got a free kick just outside the box. Thea Mallett steps up and shoots and the Essex keeper just stands and sees the ball pass just wide of her post.

3 minutes to half time and Lancashire hit the bar again! Olivia Rose Askam turns in the box and strikes but hits the bar for the second time today.

The half time score was 1-0 to Essex.

Lancashire came out again to try and push for their equaliser but still can’t get the better of Essex keeper Imogen Riches.

65 minutes played and Lancashire’s Keira Walsh shoots from outside the box and keeper Imogen Riches makes the save to put it behind for a corner which then leads to a shot by Chloe Adams but the ball goes out for a goal kick. Lancashire were pressing hard for that goal to put them level.

4 minutes later and the ball is put forward into the Essex box but Sarah Chadwick loses her footing at the crucial moment and misses the chance to go level.

On 72 minutes Essex double their lead with a shot by Kelly Stubbington which was hit from the right side just outside the box to lob the Lancashire keeper. Essex 2 Lancashire 0.

2 minutes from time and Lancashire finally get one past the Essex keeper. The ball came across from a corner and found it’s way into the back of the net courtesy of Sarah Chadwick who hits the ball through the defence and past the goalkeeper from inside the 6 yard box to pull one back for Lancashire.

The game finished soon after with Lancashire trying to push for another goal but Essex held on to win the game 2-1.

Both teams were presented their medals by John Appleby, ESFA Council Member and Essex County Schools’ FA were presented with the trophy to crown them National Champions for 2013!
