Eight schools from across Essex are eagerly anticipating their participation in the County Finals of the Under 11 Danone Nations Boys’ and Girls’ 7-a-side Cup Competitions at Arsenal FC’s Academy Dome in February, after winning their local stages.

“The boys are really excited about the finals, and we’ll be starting to train the week we return to school after the Christmas break,” revealed Lisa Brown, who manages Churchfields Junior in Redbridge. They’re one of four qualifying schools to emerge from the London Boroughs regional event held at the London Marathon Playing Fields in Fairlop.

“They had an amazing day back in November. The boys were really on top of their game that day and never lost their focus throughout. Hopefully this will be third time lucky for Churchfields as we’ve been runners-up for the past two years. We’re all really looking forward to the day and we’ll be bringing a great group of supporters,” she added.

Churchfields and St Joseph’s Catholic Primary from Havering qualified for the Malcolm Moffatt Trophy final on Thursday 7th February, with St Joseph’s girls team making it a double celebration for their school by claiming one of the two Under 11s Girls Seven-a-Side Cup places on Tuesday 5th, joining Godwin Primary from Barking & Dagenham. It’s the second year in succession that St Joseph’s have managed that particular achievement.

Outer Essex was split between two venues, with ex-Arsenal and England midfielder Ray Parlour present at the Under 11s Girls Cup at Chigwell School and the Grange Farm Trust on 15th November. He felt compelled to tweet about his experience, declaring: “Some good little players over there. Great facilities.” Moulsham Junior from Chelmsford, for the second year running, and Bournes Green from Southend qualified for the County Finals.

A week later, at Colchester United Community Sports Trust’s Shrub End facility, Bournes Green were celebrating again as their boys won through into the Malcolm Moffatt Trophy finals. This does pose a problem as the school only possesses one kit, requiring a sharp two-day turnaround at the laundrette! They were joined by Shenfield St Mary’s in qualifying for the County Finals.

The Essex County Football Association have expressed gratitude to all three locations for the use of their facilities as well as extending thanks to sports therapist Sheila Macaulay, the match officials, the Young Leaders from the Chelmsford College Football Apprentices scheme and the Barking Abbey Girls Football Academy.
