Repton attendees watch their team intently

The ESFA held this year’s high level coaching and development course at Repton School, Derbyshire between August 20th and 24th. The course was a great success and allowed 71 players nominated from around the country to represent their counties and experience an elite level training camp.

The facilities were magnificent and we are very thankful to the school for their excellent hospitality. Over the five days the 71 players were put through their paces by our England Schoolboy manager Andy Buckingham and his coaching staff.

To gain further insight into this yearly event please read on to find an excerpt from the managers report;

‘I went to Repton with a little trepidation, being in charge of the course for the first time. Yet I need not have been, because Sue Gifford and John Read in the office had all the bases covered. I added a couple of In Service coaching sessions with all of the coaches prior to the boys arriving. We shared some ideas and agreed on a player centred philosophy.

One of my aims, for the course was to bring in some new young teacher coaches. Andy Lowe (Spenymoor), Roger Haythornthwaite (Hyndburn) and Nick Cox (Redditch), came in and proved to be, not only enthusiastic, but also tremendous football people. They all have the UEFA B Licence, and were more than able to support the more experienced lead coaches.

The course was great fun, the 71 boys who attended from all over the country, all went away inspired to progress their game to a higher level. This was all down to the coaches Simon Coleman, Ben Lavelle, Richard Alderson and my brilliant assistant for next season, Andy Blight. Physios, Steve Wilderspin and Mike Hewitt worked tirelessly to keep the lads fit and very few missed any training or games, due to their knowledge and professionalism. The evening of core stability exercises that they staged produced a lot of laughs for both the staff and the boys. The goalkeepers, were coached superbly by Max Johnson, a former County and District Schools footballer himself, at only 21 years old demonstrated skills well beyond his years.

The ESFA Council members were employed to good effect in analysing the games in the afternoon. Teams were rewarded not for winning games but for making successful passes into the final third of the pitch, amongst other statistics. Nigel Brown, Stuart Inger, Dave Woolaston and Owen Aiston did a super job and it meant that they could not nod off during the games!

Thank you everyone for making my first course as Director a hugely successful, and most importantly a really enjoyable one.’

Andy Buckingham

We wish Andy all the best for the upcoming season and are already excited for next year’s course! Players and Teachers alike, remember to get your nominations in nice and early!
