Twelve schools from Area D of the English Schools’ FA which covers the counties of Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Humberside, Northamptonshire and Derbyshire took part in an enjoyable Finals Day in Derby on Friday 27 January 2012. Each school was the champion of their Local District Association and were competing for a place in the National Finals.

South Charnwood School from West Leicestershire SFA won the girls’ section so both will be amongst the 8 teams from all over the country who will compete for ESFA Munich Trophies 5-a-side National Cup at the Powerleague in Derby Monday 05 March 2012.

The teams taking part were divided into two leagues of six with the winners and runners-up going through to the knock-out stages. League A was the closer of the two groups with the Vale Academy (Brigg) setting the pace but almost being reined in by the later results from Wolfreton (East Riding) and Trinity (Nottingham). In the penultimate game, Wolfreton beat Vale 1-0 and left the latter on 10 points while giving themselves of the runners-up sport with 9.

This brought them level with Trinity (Nottingham) but the Nottingham school had won their last match 4-0 against Noel Baker (Derby) giving them a goal difference of +4 compared with Wolfreton’s +2

In the other League, South Charnwoood (West Leicestershire) always led the way although they lost their 100% record with a 1-0 defeat by runners-up St Mary’s Sport College from Hull. The latter will left to rue their slow start as they drew 0-0 with third placed Arnold Hill (South Notts) and then 1-1 with Brookfield (Chesterfield) in their first two matches and despite defeating South Charnwood could not edge them out of top place.

As with the boys’ competition, both semi-finals went to the drama of penalty kicks. South Charnwood and Trinity drew 1-1 in match play but Trinity could not beat the Charnwood keeper in the penalty shoot-out. St. Mary’s drew 0-0 with Vale but ensured that the final was between two teams from the same league group by going through 2-0 on penalties.

In the final, South Charnwood avenged their only defeat of the day by winning 2-1 in another close match so they will represent Area D in the National finals on March 5th.
