West Wiltshire Schools' FA tour Holland

West Wiltshire Schools' FA boys celebrate win

The Under 11 West Wiltshire & BANES Schools’ FA team returned triumphant from an international football tournament in Holland last weekend.

The squad of 10 and 11 year olds have received free coaching all year, having been selected from a trial process last June, and the trip to Holland was the pinnacle of their season. This year’s squad has been particularly hardworking and spirited, the rewards of which have been seen in the mature performances achieved against other District teams throughout the year and in the Regional Finals competition.

Consequently, hopes of a successful trip were high, and so it proved to be. Entering teams into the under 11 and under 12 age groups of the Den Bosch tournament, both teams played opposition from Holland, Belgium and England. By remaining unbeaten throughout and scoring a total of 53 goals, the boys fully deserved the accolades received from various members of the Dutch administration and have received a further invitation to compete in another international tournament.

The experience was not just a challenge in terms of the football, however. Staying in 7 berth chalets at a nearby Center Parcs, the boys were responsible for cooking their own meals, cleaning the chalets, packing their own bags and managing their own finances; quite a set of tasks for boys in year 5 and 6!

Coach Shane Kiely, “We have been running the programme for 8 seasons now and know what boys of this age are capable of if they are given the opportunity and the right environment. We ask them to play in a particular way which is often very risky, and we ask them to take more responsibility than they are accustomed to, but they do it and really enjoy it. It takes all season, but they are seeing the benefits now of their hard work and trust. It is a real pleasure to watch the way they play, and to see the friendships that have grown.”

To qualify for the year 6 squad you have to play football for your local primary school and attend a series of training sessions which are held in June. A 20 man squad is then chosen to work for a season with qualified coaches and teachers – the programme is funded by sponsors and involves no cost to the boys.
