U18 Colleges’ Trophy Final: Queens 0-2 Gateshead

Gateshead College were crowned champions of the ESFA Under 18 Colleges’ Trophy this afternoon after they overcame Queens’ Academy (Watford SFA), 2-0, at Edgar Street, home to Hereford United Football Club.
Gateshead started the match much the brighter team, possibly due to Queens’ late arrival following heavy traffic leaving north of London.
On 12 minutes, Gateshead’s number 8, Josh Allen, headed straight at Queens’ keeper, Will Norris, following a great cross from the lively Michael Sweet.
Michael Sweet was in the action again on 22 minutes, when his header was placed wide of the target from close range, with the goal at his mercy.
Gateshead went 1-0 up on 27 minutes when captain, Michael Dodds, unleashed an unstoppable drive from the corner of the penalty area which flew in off the keeper's left hand post.
As the first half drew on, Queens’ Academy began to gain more possession in the midfield and forced a number of corners. Centre half, David Ogbogu, glanced two headers wide from similar positions and looked a constant threat from set pieces for the Hertfordshire team.
On 32 minutes, Josh Allan doubled the lead for Gateshead with a glancing header following a free-kick.
Queens’ Academy came back strong in the second half and hit the bar. However, their efforts did not affect the score line and the game finished 2-0. The trophy was presented to the captain of Gateshead College by Mike Coyne, Chairman of the English Schools' Football Association.
