Howard Webb referees English Schools' FA Cup Final

Howard Webb (third left) referees ESFA Trophy Final

Howard Webb caused quite a stir amongst players and officials when he arrived to referee the ESFA Under 18 Inter County Trophy Final between Hertfordshire and Lancashire at Sheffield Wednesday Football Club on Thursday 07 April.

Despite his busy schedule, Howard spent considerable time talking to players, officials and spectators and signing autographs before the game and at the post match function.

It may well be the first time a World Cup Final referee has been in charge of an ESFA National Cup game. Mark Warren, who lives locally to ESFA HQ, was one of the linesmen at the 1998 World Cup Final in France and he regularly officiates at a variety of schools’ football matches.

Lancashire eventually won 5-4 on penalties after the match finished 1-1 after extra time.

The ESFA currently operates a bursary scheme for schools that wish for their pupils to undertake a referee course via the local County FA. To request a bursary form please email admin@esfa.co.uk
