ESFA U18 Colleges Trophy Girls Winners 2011 - Filton College

Champions 2011 - Filton College (Bristol & South Gloucestershire SFA)

A glorious day at the Keepmoat Stadium, home to Doncaster Rovers FC, greeted both teams on Monday 21 March to contest the final of the English Schools’ FA U18 Colleges’ Trophy for girls.

Both colleges started brightly and kept good possession, but it was Filton College that took an early lead when Gabby Bird was played through and coolly slotted passed the advancing Gateshead keeper, Laura Wareham.

On 13 minutes Keira Ramshaw nearly drew Gateshead College level, but Filton keeper, Abby Evans was equal to the shot and made a fine save.

Gateshead eventually drew level on 26 minutes when Keira Ramshaw took the ball through the Filton defence and rounded Laura Wareham to roll the ball into an empty net.

On 46 minutes, Gateshead nearly went 2-1 up following a counter attack from a Filton corner. Beth Gardner raced clear from the half way line and struck what looked like a goal-bound effort, only to see the ball shave the outside of the post.

As the second half wore on, Filton’s midfield gradually began to take control of the game and were playing some attractive football. Gateshead however, looked increasingly dangerous on the counter attack.

Gateshead again nearly went ahead again on 62 minutes, but a glanced header from Samantha Campion, following a corner, fell wide of the upright.

On 69 minutes, Filton’s Octavia Saunders sent a powerful free-kick from 35 yards which safely landed in the arms of the grateful Laura Wareham.

Extra time ensued as neither team could mange to add to their tally in the second half. But the crowd didn’t have to wait long for the Gateshead to take a 2-1 lead thanks to a scrambled effort from number 9, Keira Ramshaw.

Filton continued to battle as tiredness set in. Their efforts were rewarded with just three minutes of extra time remaining, when Charlotte Jones smashed home a fantastic half volley from the corner of the penalty area to send the tie to penalties.

Filton College (Bristol & South Gloucestershire Schools’ FA) won 4-3 on penalties.
