Former Kent Schools’ FA and England Schools’ FA International, Chris Smalling, is on the verge of signing for Manchester United in a deal estimated to be worth around £8 million, according to press reports this morning.

Fulham centre-back, Chris Smalling, headed for a medical at Manchester United straight after Tuesday night's 2-0 defeat to Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

There are still stages of the transfer to be completed but Fulham boss Roy Hodgson insisted: "There is no doubt in my mind he's going to United. Terms have been agreed, he's going for a medical and will sign for them and will join them from next season”.

The 20-year-old, whose profile was initially boosted while playing for England Under 18 Schoolboys in a 2-0 win against Scotland at Wembley Stadium in June 2008; was at the time, on the verge of signing for Middlesbrough after Gareth Southgate had spotted him during the Centenary Shield campaign that season.

Shortly after the International at Wembley, Southgate offered him a contact at the Riverside but Smalling made a dramatic last minute u-turn and decided to stay in London with family and friends. Fulham Football Club snapped up the highly rated centre half soon after.
