Between July 18th and 28th, Queensbury School (Dunstable) Year 11 Football team travelled to Blaine, Minnesota, to compete in the USA Cup.

Queensbury progressed well through the early rounds of the competition with several emphatic results.  In the final Queensbury faced the might of the Canadians, Edmonton Drillers, who had an equally impressive record in the tournament. Queensbury started the game with mixed fortunes, with many decent chances unusually not finished, and Josh Millett lasting only two minutes before coming off injured. However, midway through the first half, a mix up at the back let in the Drillers for an easy finish. Then, just 53 seconds into the 2nd half, Queensbury again gifted their opponents a goal after a pin ball style mix up in the area.

This woke up the boys who immediately responded with their first goal through Kai Penn. With spirits up, Queensbury then turned on the style they had shown throughout the USA Cup, scoring a second through Lee Neale and third in quick succession by Sean Herr, with the third goal sparking hysteria in the capacity crowd! The game was then wrapped up by top scorer of the USA Cup, Lee Neale, to make it 4-2 to Queensbury.

The team were crowned Champions in an awards ceremony where captain Josh Cook lifted the Trophy amid jubilant celebrations. It was a fitting way for some of the boys to finish their Queensbury footballing career, under the guidance of team manager Gareth Jones.

Gareth said, “This was the highlight of my teaching career and a very proud moment for the boys and myself. The boys throughout the tournament conducted themselves in a professional manner, representing their School and English football. I wish them all the best of luck in the future - they have been a real pleasure to coach.”

Mark Gurney said, "We are extremely proud of the achievements of the boys, and their manager. Gareth has coached these boys for the last two years and it is very pleasing to see them play in such a cohesive and stylish way. They thoroughly deserved the opportunity to compete at the USA Cup, which has now become a tradition at Queensbury."
