Thirty-two teams took part in the East Midlands’ Area Finals of this popular competition, each one representing a Local Association. Many Local Associations had held local competitions last term, some of them involving five separate rounds leading to finals

The teams were divided into three groups with the winners and best runner-up qualifying for the semi-finals. South Hunsley School started the day well with a 3-0 win over Roundhill Community College and with successive 4-0, 3-0 and 6-1 victories cruised through to the semi-finals scoring sixteen goals and conceding only one. Their last victory was against runners-up in Group C, South Axholme (Scunthorpe SFA) who had no answer to the skill and power of the East Riding SFA school.

Group B was far more competitive with John Port School eventually going through with nine points from four matches but three other schools, runners-up Kingsthorpe (Northampton SFA) plus Lancaster (Leicester SFA) and Dukeries (Worksop and Retford SFA) finishing within 2 points of the winner. Dukeries actually beat John Port 3-0 and were left to rue their 2-1 defeat by Lancaster.

Group A saw Kibworth (South Leicestershire SFA) and Gedling (South Notts SFA) dominate, each being undefeated and drawing 1-1 with each other. Gedling took top place by virtue of the biggest win of the day, a 9-1 thrashing of Montsaye (Kettering and Corby SFA) which gave them the superior goal difference.

In the semi-finals, Gedling took an early two goal lead against John Port but two quick replies by the Derby school changed the complexion of the game and they ran out 5-3 winners. The other game proved a tight affair necessitating penalties with South Hunsley going through 5-4 against Kibworth.

In the final, John Port took the lead in the first minute but South Hunsley scored four times in five minutes to go 4-1 ahead and with both sides tiring, the score remained that way until the final whistle

Final: South Hunsley (East Riding SFA) 4-1 John Port (Derby SFA)

The National Finals will be held at the Derby Powerleague on Monday 9 March.
