Dayncourt School, one of the two Nottinghamshire representatives in the U16 Royal Air Force Schools’ Cup for girls, went out in Round One in that most unfortunate of ways, a penalty shoot-out.

Dayncourt had the boost of an early goal from Sophie Mellor but the home side went ahead with two goals from corners, the second of them due to lack of concentration in the Dayncourt defence. The Radcliffe school with Tor Coates and Steph Webster solid in defence and well served also by some fine clearances from Claire Leivers and a battling display in midfield by Melissa Wood fought back well and played some excellent football in the second half; this was rewarded by a second goal from Sophie Mellor who had six shots on target during the game. This took the game into extra time but with both sides tiring, neither could break the deadlock and penalties were the outcome.

Despite the efforts of Amy Adams in goal and successful attempts from Sophie Mellor and Louise Marlow, Bourne narrowly won the shoot-out 3-2 to go through to the last 32 of the competition.

Team Manager Kate Carroll said that she was very proud of the team who played great football and they can now look forward to the Nottinghamshire final later in the season. Both she and the girls were most grateful to parent Ian Marlow of local club Radcliffe Olympic for his experience and expert coaching which enabled them to get to the ‘nationals’.
