Hampshire Girls celebrate win

Inter County Competition -
Sponsored by the National Union of Teachers Monday 08 May 2006, AFC Bournemouth

Leicestershire started the strongest and probably deserved their lead after nine minutes when Courtney Sweetman-Kirk finished off an excellent move down the left. Hampshire's first real opportunity came when Kelly Sims' shot rebounded off the near post.

Hampshire went in at half time a goal down but wasted little time to draw level as Molly Clarke drove in an excellent shot after only 30 seconds of play in the second half. Hampshire than controlled the game for long periods without taking the lead but Leicestershire always looked likely to score.

With the teams locked at 1-1, extra time was needed and Hampshire really put the visitors under pressure early on. With three minutes of extra time played, Hampshire gained a corner and after several shots from the forwards, Ciara Allan found the back of the net and that was followed two minutes later when Cherelle Khassal ran at the defence, drew the keeper off her line and lobbed the ball over her head to put Hampshire 3-1 ahead.

Leicestershire battled back and pulled one back in the last minute of the first half but Hampshire remained strong at the back and kept the visitors at bay to win the Trophy outright.

It was very much a team performance which left the managers Vanessa Raynbird and Neil Cleaver well satisfied.
