This weekend saw both Newcastle and Bradford bounce out of the English Schools’ Trophy to continue a season that has seen a string of surprise results.

All the big guns have now been knocked out of the Trophy, which must leave the remaining so-called ‘smaller’ Associations feeling they have a great chance of winning the competition this season.

Gateshead showed great character to come from behind at the break to go on and win the game convincingly 3-1 at Swalwell Football Club on Saturday morning.  The visitors, Bradford, took the lead on 5 minutes through centre forward, Marcus Edwards.  Gateshead responded with two quick strikes after the break to put them in control, through Graeme Barber and Nathan Luscombe.  Then 5 minutes before time Jonthan Rowell sealed the game to send Gateshead through to the last eight of the competition.

In what could be described as the other shock of the round,  East Riding defeated Newcastle 1-0 at home through a second half strike from Tom Gotts  East Riding now face a trip to Merseyside in the Quarter-Finals to take on Knowsley, who narrowly beat Stafford 2-1 on Monday 10 January at Lilleshall National Sports Centre.

In the South, Eastleigh and Winchester overcame Essex outfit, Newham, 2-0 at Hamble Football Club.  Two second half goals from Scott Waters saw the Hampshire side through to the Quarters.  Eastleigh must now wait to find out who they play in the next round as the have been drawn at home to the winners of Waltham Forest and Bournemouth who play tonight at Leyton Football Club  - 7.30 pm kick-off.
