JERSEY FESTIVAL REPORT 2014

The 40th Jersey Primary inter district festival took place on the island between the 12th and 17th April. Sixteen teams played in two groups; the Helier Group and the Pierson Group with inter group play-offs at the end. In true ESFA festival spirit there were no champions and no cups to be won. There were 11 ESFA districts taking part with Gloucester, Orpington and St Albans having A and B teams, and the sixteenth team being made up from St Paul’s, a local U12 team. Many of the youngsters on view are attached to professional clubs and were keen to show off their skills which they did in abundance. The level of performance and competition was very high indeed. Many parents come over to support their teams and whilst vocal, of course, they made a real contribution to the festival by following the respect agenda of the ESFA and FA. No-one seemed at all phased by the fact that this was the first year that the festival was played in a 9 v 9 format rather than 11 v 11.

The festival has excellent sponsorship from PWC, and continuing strong support from the Jersey FA. The games are all played on a central venue called the Florence Boot Fields, on pitches which are every bit as good as Wembley, and especially marked out for this event. Accommodation is in the high quality Metropole Hotel in the centre of St Helier and this adds to the experience of the festival for the boys. With games being played only in the mornings the squads are able to make the week a real educational experience as well as a soccer tournament.

From the first idea of this festival in 1973 and for the past 40 years it has been organised and run by Pat Cullinane. More than 6000 players have attended the festival including many household names. This is an outstanding achievement and I was delighted to go to the island to represent the chairman of the ESFA and be able to thank Pat for his tremendous effort. Long may he and the Jersey Festival continue.
