Where are they now: Ben Tozer

Ben Tozer

Ben Tozer

Ben Tozer was an England Schoolboy International and Devon County Schools’ FA representative player during the 2006-07 season. Ben made four England appearances against Belgium, Scotland, Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland that season which also saw the England Schoolboys lift the SAFIB Centenary Shield.

Tozer began his career as a youth player at his local club Plymouth Argyle but former Argyle youth coach, David Byrne, who by this point had taken up a similar role at Swindon Town persuaded the Tozer family to allow Ben to join him in Wiltshire during the summer of 2007. On August 14 2007, Tozer made his full debut for Swindon as a makeshift left-back in the Carling Cup match with Charlton.

In November 2007, Tozer started a 4 day trial with Everton of the Premier League, returning in time for Swindon's FA cup game with Forest Green. Tozer completed his move to Newcastle on 7 January 2008 for a reported £1 million, penning a four-and-a-half year deal with the club. He was Sam Allardyce’s first signing as Newcastle United manager. At the time Tozer said, “I have spoken with Sam Allardyce - he's great manager and I'm looking forward to working with him."

On 11 May 2008, Tozer was named on the substitutes bench against Everton in a Premier League fixture, but did not play.

The talented young defender was back from a five-month injury layoff against Manchester United reserves in April of this year "Ben Tozer did very well," Toon reserves coach Richard Money said. "He's not trained or played for five months, but despite that I thought it was his best game for the club and I'm pleased for him."

Ben has made appearances for Newcastle United’s first team during this pre-season against Shamrock Rovers, Leyton Orient and Dundee United.
