Worksop lift Trophy after thriller

N.U.T. Trophy
Poole & East Dorset 2
Worksop & Retford 3
Worksop won 5-4 on aggregate
After a first leg of nearly 40 attempts on goal had ended at Worksop in a 2-2 draw, both teams started the second leg at AFC Bournemouth with everything to play for. As in the first game, Worksop and Retford were well on top in the first 20 minutes but also as on that occasion were profligate in front of goal. Lewis Croucher twice lobbed wide of an empty net from good positions while Conor Higginson also shot wide when it seemed easier to score.
The game was then held up for several minutes when Poole's midfield player, Ben Reeves, unfortunately had to be taken off with a suspected broken collar bone. His substitute, Charlie Tubbs, made an immediate impression, however, creating the first goal of the game when his cross from the right was met by Matt Kemble whose shot was blocked by Worksop keeper Anthony Crump but fell to Tom Webb who calmly converted the rebound.
Two minutes before half-time, Croucher atoned for his earlier misses with a fine left foot volley past Scott Wilson. The visitors' relief was short-lived as in the time added on for the injury for Reeves, Sam Ball restored Poole and East Dorset's advantage with another volley which took a deflection off a defender.
Worskop and Retford again started the better in the second half and it took them only four minutes to draw level as Tom Mullen clipped the ball past Wilson. Ten minutes later, the same player put his side into the lead for the first time with a neat header from Croucher's cross which entered the net just inside the far post.

Worksop boys celebrate victory!
At this stage, the visitors were well on top with the fluent build-up play they had shown in the first leg but the later stages of the match were disrupted by many substitutions from both sides.
The nearest Poole and East Dorset came to forcing the game into extra time was a long shot by Ashley Ayley which just cleared the bar while a scudding low drive by Matt Kemble which Crump fumbled but held at the second attempt. Generally, however, Worksop and Retford played out time with great composure and the final whistle brought wild celebrations from players and supporters.
It is remarkable that the final was contested by two of the smallest Schools' Associations in the country with Poole and East Dorset choosing from only six schools and the winners from only seven.
A paying crowd of 878 plus the numerous guests showed their appreciation of an emotional but sporting encounter as the N.U.T. Trophy was presented on the pitch to the Worksop & Retford captain Sam Stretton by Nigel Brown, Chairman of the English Schools' FA.
