U11 Sainsbury's Super Soccer Saturday

As last season, this year's National Finals were held at Keele University, Staffordshire, under glorious weather on Saturday 17 June 2006.

The following competitions were held for the U11 Primary Schools' age group:

U11 7-a-side Inter Association Trophy
U11 7-a-side Schools' Cup for Boys
U11 6-a-side Schools' Cup for Girls
U11 Small Schools' Soccer Sixes

7-A-SIDE INTER ASSOCIATION

Semi-Finals
Poole and East Dorset 0 St Alban's 0 (aet)
St Albans won 3-2 on penalties

A closely fought semi-final had to be decided on penalties after even extra time had failed to separate the sides. Both Poole and St Albans missed their first penalties and then scored the next two. Poole's fourth penalty was converted confidently but St Alban's missed theirs so that the former won 3-2

Leicester 2 Chester-le-Street 0

Goals from Leicester's Lewis Thurland and Liam Canavan created a surprise in their semi-final as Chester-le-Street were winners of Group A while Leicester finished runners-up in Group B although both sides gained seven points out of nine in the group competitions.

Final: Leicester 1 Poole and East Dorset 0

A single goal by Liam Canavan brought the Sainsbury's Trophy to Leicester in a pulsating final against Poole and East Dorset. The Dorset side had the consolation of winning the Fair Play Award for this competition. The two teams in the final were both from Group B and in the group, their match ended in a 1-1 draw but Leicester just triumphed when the teams met again in the final.

7-A-SIDE SCHOOLS (BOYS)

Semi-Finals

St Augustine's RC School (Nottinghamshire) 1
Bentley High Street School (South Yorkshire) 0

St. Augustine's School from Nottingham reached the final of the competition when a single goal from Louis Greenway Tambini was sufficient to give them victory over Bentley High Street School (South Yorkshire)

St. Hugh's School (Lincolnshire) 3
Hextable Junior School (Kent) 1

An own goal plus efforts from Lewis Woodhall and Tom Martin gave St. Hugh's School a comfortable win over Hextable for whom Tom Hammond's effort was only a consolation.

Final: St Augustine's 3 St Hugh's 1

St. Augustine's completed a magnificent season in which they had swept all before them in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire and won the Fred Riddell Trophy presented each year to the outstanding Primary school in the city with a 3-1 win over St. Hugh's School. Both schools had qualified from the Midlands Regional Finals although the two schools had not met in that competition.

Louis Greenway Tambini was the St. Augustine's hero with two goals with the other coming from Joseph Dadoo but they would the first to give credit to the school's excellent defence who conceded only two goals in their five games

6-A-SIDE SCHOOLS (GIRLS)
Semi-Finals

The eventual winners of the Girls' 6-a-side tournament, Abbey Road School from West Bridgford, a suburb of Nottingham, continued their high scoring form of the group stages through to their semi-final against Group A runners-up, Stafford Primary School from Sussex and ran out 3-0 winners. Blayze Teal opened the scoring and two further goals from Fiona Worts ensured a smooth passage through to the final.

The other semi-final matched Our Lady of Lourdes School from Greater Manchester, the Group A winners against Sandal Endowed School who finished behind Abbey Road in their group only on goal difference. The goal which settled the game came from Our Lady's striker Amelia Colgan.

The strong and skilful Amelia Colgan, Our Lady's outstanding player throughout the tournament gave them an early lead but Abbey Road fought back well and equalised just before half-time through Hannah McLennaghan. Excellent defensive work early in the second half gave Abbey Road control and they were able to press forward as Our Lady's players tired. McLennaghan completed her hat-trick and Fiona Worts added another as Abbey Road scored three goals in the last four minutes for their fully deserved victory.

SMALL SCHOOLS' SOCCER SIXES
Semi-Finals

The most remarkable game of the day saw Three Oaks Primary School from Shropshire defeat St Swithun Wells RC Primary School from Hampshire in the semi-final between the winners of Group B and the runners-up of Group A. Goals from Jon Thursfield and Ryan Kenny for Three Oaks and Kai Widderington and Callum Holloway for St. Swithun Wells produced a 2-2 draw after extra time and the game went to penalties. Nineteen penalties were needed before Three Oaks eventually won 10-9 to go through by the narrowest of margins.

The other semi-final was much more straight forward with Holy Family and St. Michael's Catholic Primary School from West Yorkshire defeating Lindow Primary School from Cheshire 2-0 thanks to goals from Izaak Perks and captain Rhys Oates.

Three Oaks (Shropshire) 3

The drama of the semi-final and the extra time which was played might perhaps have given the advantage to Holy Family and St. Michael's but this was far from the case as Three Oaks won 3-1. Their hero was Bradley Mezen whose hat-trick proved too much for the West Yorkshire side although Rhys Oates did score a consolation goal for them.
