U16 Girls Trophy: Essex 1-4 Hampshire

Hampshire Girls were joint winners
with Merseyside at Saltergate last season
At Ford's Sports & Social Club, Ilford, Essex on Tuesday 28 March
Hampshire travelled to Essex on Tuesday (28 March) in the semi-final of the ESFA N.U.T. U16 Inter County Trophy for Girls with the hope of reaching the Final for the second year running.
Hampshire kicked off against the strong wind and started the stronger. After 8 minutes Cherelle Khassal (Cowes) crossed the ball from the right, Isobel Kent (Cantell) spun on the ball to lose her defender and passed to Molly Clarke (St Luke's) who finished well to put Hampshire ahead.
Shortly afterwards, Molly Clarke had a powerful shot pushed around the far post by the Essex keeper Lacey Amato (Brittons). On 13 minutes, Hampshire went further ahead when Alice Wheeler (Hamble) sent over a perfect corner for Jo Morris (Cranbourne) to head home. This was soon followed by another fine corner that evaded the keeper and was firmly headed on to the cross bar but was then cleared.
In the 21st minute, Molly Clarke picked up a weak clearance to drive the ball over the keepers outstretched hands to put Hampshire three up. A minute later, Cherelle Khassal collected the ball, ran at the defence and although her clever lob beat the advancing Essex keeper it lacked the pace to beat a retreating defender who did well to keep it out of the net.
Essex came out in the second half, determined to make a battle of it and even as early as the first minute, Alice Wheeler clear off the Hampshire line following a free kick and goalie Stacey Parkinson (Bitterne Park) made a good diving save to turn the ball round her right post.
Essex were rewarded for their efforts in the 51th minute when Toni Smith (Grays Convent) converted a free kick over the outstretched hands of Stacey Parkinson. However, Hampshire were to have the final say when Alice Wheeler passed the ball to Sophie Jackson (Sandown) who laid it off for Cherelle Khassal to run in and complete the scoring.
It was a good team performance and bodes well for Hampshire who now await the outcome of the other semi-final between Leicestershire and Shropshire on 6th April.
